If you know that your home has not had its sewer replaced, it is wise to plan in advance for when that may need to occur. Several indicators such as more frequent system backups, bright green patches of grass and cracks in the foundation that look like “settling” may clue you in on an immediate problem. Referring to this chart may help prevent a surprise if your system begins to fail. Please note that chart dates listed are approximate (for instance, if your home was built in 1960, a galvanized steel sewer may still have been installed).
Sewers installed more than 60 years ago need to be watched, as they will probably need maintenance soon. Terra cotta sewers can last 50-100 years. Galvanized steel can last for over 40 years. Orangeburg may just barely last over 50 years. The lifetime of cast iron ranges from 50 to 100 years. Properly installed PVC sewers will last over 100 years.
