The condensate drain line in an A/C unit gets rid of the humidity your unit pulls from the air. A clogged condensate drain line can not only hinder the efficiency of your A/C unit, but it can lead to the drain pan overflowing. This can cause water damage to your home. In this post, Solution Based Plumbing, Heating, and A/C will explore how to clean a clogged condensate drain line.
Why Condensate Drain Lines Clog
Condensation should run down the line and exit your home outside. However, algae, sediment, mold and insects can all cause blockages. Clogs may cause water to back up into the drain pan under your air handler. Newer units have sensors that will shut the unit off and alert you to a problem. But with an older unit, it’s a good idea to check under your air handler from time to time.
Clearing a Clogged Condensate Drain Line
- Turn your unit off at the thermostat and the breaker
- If you have an indoor air handler (usually in an attic or utility closet), locate the condensate pan under the unit. It may be covered by a removable access panel. Standing water in this pan is a strong indication that your drain line is clogged. You can use a wet/dry vacuum to remove the moisture or soak it up with rags, then clean the pan with hot soapy water to remove algae or mold.
- Check for obvious clogs where the drain line exits your house (typically through a wall near the condenser unit).
- Next, you can attach the hose of a wet vac to the drain line access point near your indoor handler. Ensure a tight connection for maximum suction and try sucking the clog out. You might need to repeat this process at the exit point outside your home.
- Use a funnel to pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into the access point and allow it to sit for 30 minutes up to a few hours. This will kill off any algae or mold. If you don’t like the odor, you can also use peroxide to break up remaining debris, or hot water with a drop of dish soap. Repeat the suction process if necessary.
