Is your heater not turning on in house and living spaces just when you need it the most? In this post, SBPHA/C discusses common heating problems and how to fix them.
Common Heating Problems
If the heat in your home isn’t working, keep an eye out for the following issues:
- Dirty Air Filters – Regularly replacing or cleaning reusable air filters is an important part of HVAC maintenance for both heating and cooling purposes. A dirty air filter can impede airflow, or in extreme cases, completely block it. When holding an air filter up to the light, you should be able to see light pass through. If not, it’s likely time to replace or clean it.
- Check Your Vents – Inspect vents in the home to ensure they are all open and free of blockages.
- Thermostat Settings – Ensure your thermostat is set to “Heat” or “Auto,” and that the temperature reflects your desired setting. If it seems as though the heat should kick on and it doesn’t, raise the temperature to the highest possible setting and wait to see if your furnace is set in motion. Sometimes the problem lies with the thermostat and can be as simple as changing the batteries.
- Check That Your System is “On” – Both gas and electric heaters have power switches on the unit itself. If all seems to be in order with your thermostat, but your unit isn’t turning on, check to see if the power switch on the unit itself is turned on. It’s also wise to take a look inside your electric panel to ensure the appropriate breaker is set to the “On” position.
- The Pilot Light – A common reason gas furnaces won’t start comes down to a dirty or faulty pilot light. As there are safety concerns surrounding pilot light maintenance, it can be a problem best left to professionals. If you smell or suspect a gas leak, it’s imperative to turn off both the power and natural gas flow to the unit, ventilate the area and call a professional immediately.
- Gas Flow – If your furnace won’t start, locate your gas control valve and ensure it’s in an “On” position.
