How to Clean a Kitchen Sink Drain: Tips and Tricks

how to clean a kitchen sink drain

Much like bathtubs and showers, your kitchen sink drain can have residue buildup that can lead to bacteria growth and unwanted clogs. For both healthy sanitation and convenience, it is important to clean your drain on a semi-regular basis. Here’s how to clean a kitchen sink drain!

The Problem

If your kitchen sink gets a lot of use, there’s a good change that it can get pretty dirty, pretty fast. From washing dishes, to mixing food scraps and ingredients, residue can build up in the drain easily, causing clogs, gross smells and bacteria growth. Without proper and consistent cleaning, these problems can get out of hand fast. It is important to know how to easily and quickly clean your sink and drain so you can avoid dealing with bigger messes in the future.

The Solutions

There are a few quick and easy methods to cleaning your sink based on what kind of sink it is. Stainless-steel sinks, for example, clean best with a baking soda and dish soap solution. For white kitchen sinks, however, using hydrogen peroxide and baking soda works best. For potential rust buildup on a porcelain sink, lemon, salt and dish soap combine for an effective mix to scrub the rust away. For any of these solutions, start by rinsing your sink and then applying the mixture, and use a sponge or microfiber cloth to scrub away any gross buildup. Afterwards, rinse the sink off with water and dry.

How to Clean a Kitchen Sink Drain

Cleaning the drain of your kitchen sink can be just as easy, but all the more important. Thankfully, you probably have the tools in your kitchen already. All you need is baking soda, distilled white vinegar and boiling water. Start by pouring one part baking soda down the drain, then slowly mix in two parts white vinegar. The easiest part now is to wait. After about 15 minutes, the cleaning solution should have done its job. Now just pour boiling water down the drain to clean and wash away any of the grimy residue still left behind.
