How to Clean Your Central AC Filter

how to clean central ac filter

HVAC filters need to be cleaned or replaced frequently. In fact, this is one of the most important things you can do to keep your A/C running efficiently. If you’re wondering how to clean central ac filter, read on! In this post, the experts at SBPHA/C explain how to clean your air filters.

Reusable Air Filters

It’s important to note not all air filters can be cleaned—some need to be replaced. If your air filter has a cardboard frame or has printed information indicating it isn’t reusable, you’ll need to buy a new one. Most home hardware stores carry HVAC filters, just be sure to note the size (usually printed on the frame) or bring your old one with you.

How to Clean a Reusable Filter

Depending on the levels of dust and air pollution in your area, or the number of pets in your home, it’s a good idea to clean your air filter at least once a month. If you notice your filter is particularly dirty or clogged when you take it out, increase the cleaning frequency.

To clean a reusable A/C filter, follow these steps:

  1. Turn off your A/C unit.
  2. Locate the filter, typically near your unit’s cold air return register. If you have multiple return registers in your house, you’ll find a filter behind each.
  3. Remove all appropriate air filters and clean both sides with a vacuum cleaner (a bristled attachment works well for this).
  4. If your filter is water-friendly (be sure to check), you can soak it an equal-parts mixture of water and vinegar. Allow it to dry COMPLETELY before replacing it.
  5. Once filters are clean, reinstall them.

While cleaning or replacing air filters regularly on your own is important, it’s still wise to invest in annual tune-ups from your local HVAC professional. A qualified technician will clean your whole unit and inspect it for any loose or worn parts.
