How to Clean Kitchen Sink Drain: 5 Easy Tips
Here are five easy tips you can use to clean a kitchen sink drain this year. Follow these tips so that there aren’t any funky smells in the house!
- Check the disposal: Do you have a garbage disposal? It could be clogged with debris. Try cleaning your garbage disposal to see if it helps with your clog or odor issue. It’s a good idea to clean it regularly, even if you aren’t experiencing any problems.
- Pour boiling water down the drain: Boiling water may help dislodge smelly debris. Remove as much standing water from the sink as possible using a container (such as a cup or bowl) or a shop-vac. The emptier the sink is, the better the boiling water will perform. It might take multiple attempts to see results.
- Use a plunger: Time to grab the plunger from the bathroom. If you have a double sink, cover the drain on the other side before using the plunger. Put the plunger over the drain and add enough water so that the bell of the plunger is completely submerged. Be sure to use plenty of vigor when plunging the drain. You should be able to hear the clog clear. Remove the plunger and let the water drain.
- Snake the drain: Many homeowners have a drain snake in their box of tools. It’s great to have on hand in the event of a clog. A snake should only be used for clogs that are further down than the P-trap (the curved part of the pipe) under the sink. You will need to remove the P-trap so the rest of the pipe is exposed, so put a bucket underneath to catch any water or debris that falls out. You can then run the snake down the exposed part of the pipe to try and push the clog further along the line.
