How to Save Money on AC Energy Bills

how to save money on ac

There’s no better time than the present to learn a few life hacks for saving money on energy costs. With a hot summer right around the corner, the experts at Solution Based Plumbing, Heating and A/C explain how to save money on AC. Let’s dive in:

  • Cover Your Windows

In the summer months, a staggering amount of heat enters through our windows. Installing mesh or solar screens can cut this heat enough to help you save big on energy costs. This tip is particularly effective for windows facing east or west.

  • Run Ceiling Fans

Keep the air in your home moving with ceiling fans set to low. This helps circulate cooled air throughout your home and avoids hot or cold “pockets.”

  • Invest in a Programmable Thermostat

Sync your A/C with your schedule to maximize on savings. When no one is home during the day, or while you’re away on vacation, raise the temperature on your thermostat by five to seven degrees. You can program your thermostat to lower the temperature again about thirty minutes before you’re due home to ensure the space is comfortable. It’s important to avoid extreme temperature shifts if you have pets in the home, so just be sure to keep things comfy for your critters.

  • Plant Shade Trees

A great deal of heat comes from sunlight shining directly onto your roof or into windows. Plant shade trees around your house to help intercept sunlight. This takes a load off of your HVAC unit, reduces wear and tear and increases its lifespan in the long run.

  • Schedule Annual HVAC Maintenance

Schedule an annual spring tune-up for your A/C unit before temperatures skyrocket. A qualified HVAC technician will clean and inspect your unit top to bottom to ensure it’s operating efficiently. Regular maintenance prevents costly problems before they occur.
