What is Short Cycling?
If your HVAC unit turns on and off when it’s not supposed to, or shuts down before completing a full cycle, it’s known as short cycling. This causes your heating and cooling system to perpetually run in its start-up phase and shut down before ever reaching its optimal, energy-efficient phase. As a result, your unit takes on more strain and uses more energy.
There are several issues that can cause an HVAC system to cycle on and off too quickly. Let’s take a look.
Improperly Sized HVAC Unit
A unit that is too big for the space it’s in can reach the desired temperature setting before completing its cycle. Conversely, a unit that is too small for a space will struggle to keep up with heating and cooling demands.
Be sure to have an HVAC professional evaluate your unit and space to ensure appropriate sizing.
Dirty/Clogged Air Filters
An HVAC unit with severely clogged air filters will struggle to move air through the system. To prevent damage from overheating, the unit may shut off prematurely. HVAC air filters should be replaced (or cleaned if reusable) every 30–90 days.
To check an air filter, hold it up to a light source. If little to no light shines through, the filter is clogged and needs to be replaced or cleaned.
A Faulty Thermostat
Since your thermostat determines when your unit turns on and off, a faulty thermostat can lead to short cycling. Be sure to check the batteries and ensure the temperature settings are correct.
It’s crucial to install a thermostat in an area where it won’t be exposed to unusual temperature shifts, such as in direct sunlight.
