My Air Conditioner is Not Cooling the House: Causes and Solutions

my air conditioner is not cooling the house

The summer months are unforgiving when it comes to the heat and humidity. That’s why you need to make sure your air conditioning system works properly before the heat becomes unbearable. A sudden loss of A/C can be not only uncomfortable, but dangerous. Today, the trusted team from Solution Based Plumbing, Heating and A/C is here to explain the possible reasons why my air conditioner is not cooling the house.

Dirty Air Filter

A common reason why your air conditioner is failing to cool your home is that the filter is dirty. Many homeowners forget that all types of A/C systems have an air filter that needs to be replaced regularly or cleaned. Check your manual or ask a technician if you’re not sure whether to replace or clean your filter. A dirty air filter can block clean, cool air from circulating throughout the home.

Blocked Condenser

For a central air system, the unit that sits outside your home is what’s known as the condenser. If the grates of the condenser are blocked by debris, the warm air it is supposed to remove from the home will simply be distributed back inside the home. Make sure there are no leaves, shrubs, trees, bushes or other debris blocking the condenser from doing a proper job. It’s a good idea to clear the area around the condenser as part of your spring HVAC maintenance routine.

Leaking Refrigerant

The air inside your home is cooled by the refrigerant inside your AC unit. The unit will struggle to cool the air in your home if the refrigerant is too low or if a leak is present. For this issue, you should have a professional HVAC company come out and inspect the refrigerant line of your unit. They’ll need to make the necessary repairs before the temperatures get too high this summer.

Leaking Ductwork

Have you checked the ductwork of your home recently? There could be a leak somewhere along the line. A leak will send the cool air into the attic, basement, or crawlspace of the home instead of through the vents and into your living space. Again, you’ll need a professional to assess your ductwork and diagnose the issue.

A/C Unit is Too Small

Another common reason why your home might not be cooled is because your A/C system is not powerful enough for the size of your home. Older units, or units meant for small spaces, won’t be able to distribute enough cool air to combat the heat in a large home. An HVAC professional will be able to determine whether your system is the proper size for your home.
