As winter slowly fades, more and more people are getting their homes ready for warmer weather. Spring is a great time to do some cleaning, and we don’t just mean the garage, basement, and attic. We also mean getting your HVAC system into proper working order. Today, the team from Solution Based Plumbing, Heating, and A/C has put together some tips for spring HVAC maintenance so your system is ready for the summer.
Clean or Replace the Air Filter
One of the first things you should do to maintain your HVAC system is to clean or replace the air filter. If you have an air filter that can be washed, dried, and put back, make sure you clean it a couple times per year. A lot of dust and dirt will accumulate, and you don’t want to run the air for the first time with the filter still dirty. If the filter cannot be washed, replace it with a new one about once every three months. You may need to clean or replace filters more often if you have pets or family members with allergies.
Clean the Outdoor Condenser Unit
Before turning your HVAC system on for the first time this spring, you may need to clean the outdoor condenser unit. Clear out the area around the unit of any leaves, branches, or other debris that has accumulated over the winter. Leave a clearance of at least two feet between the unit and any shrubs or bushes that you plant.
Also, look for signs that a pest has made a home inside the condenser unit. Mouse droppings or chewed wires usually point to mice. If you do see chewed wires, don’t turn the system on. You’ll want to call SBPHA/C for air conditioning repair. Using the A/C with damaged electrical parts can be dangerous and lead to more damage.
Duct Cleaning
The air ducts in your home should be professionally cleaned at least once every five years. You can get away with a cleaning every seven years, but try not to go any longer than that. Cleaning the ducts will remove a lot of dust, dirt, debris, and even mold that may have grown over the years. Clean ducts will send clean, fresh air throughout the home.
