An inefficient A/C system can be a real inconvenience on hot days, but these summer A/C maintenance tips will help you keep your cool this season!
Summer A/C Maintenance Tips
- Thermostat Settings: Ideally, you’ll want your unit to keep you cool while you are home and save energy when you are away. Installing a programmable thermostat is a great solution, and newer smart thermostats can even be controlled remotely from your smartphone! Conserving your unit’s power while you aren’t using your space can increase its lifespan.
- Change/Clean Filters: Air filters typically need to be changed, or cleaned if you have reusable air filters, at least once every three months. It’s a good idea to check filters monthly, as circumstances like having furry pets or running your unit often might require changing or cleaning filters more frequently.
- Seal Air Ducts: Leaks in air ducts might be sending cool air into all the wrong places. Properly sealing ductwork can help your unit run more efficiently, ensuring cool air actually makes it into your space!
- Check Your Outdoor Unit: Cleaning the outdoor condenser unit and keeping it clear of debris, like foliage, can make a huge difference. You’ll also want to ensure any plants or shrubbery surrounding the unit is trimmed back, allowing enough space around the condenser for proper air flow.
- Check Refrigerant: Ensure refrigerant (Freon) levels are optimal – low levels might indicate a leak somewhere in your system.
- Clean Your Coils: Keeping evaporator and condenser coils clean can prevent dirt and mold from building up, along with increasing the efficiency of your system.
