How to Find and Change Your AC Filter

where is ac filter

While there are times that our home appliances may require an expert hand and professional skill, there are some simple preventative maintenance tasks that you as a homeowner can take on. As summer keeps heating up, we’ve got answers to the most popular AC-related questions, such as, “Where is AC filter?” and “How do I change my AC filter?”

Where Is AC Filter?

First you’ll need to know what kind of air conditioning unit you have. The four most common categories of air conditioners are portable, window, split, and central air conditioners.

  • Portable Air Conditioner: A filter in a portable AC unit can usually be found a rear compartment. The filter can be reused once cleaned.
  • Window Air Conditioner: In window air conditioners, the filter is also often reusable once cleaned. It is typically located in the front of the unit.
  • Split Air Conditioner: This type of air conditioner generally cools an entire home or building, as opposed to portable or window units meant for only one space. A split air conditioner has an inside unit and an outside unit. The washable/reusable filter is usually located in the front of the side component.
  • Central Air Conditioner: Often located in a basement or utility closet, central air conditioners have a filter that must be replaced on a schedule determined by the manufacturing company, as well as based on your usage. Filters may be found directly in front of a vent or in an air filter slot within the HVAC unit itself.

Once you’re clear on your type of AC unit, break out your owner’s manual for specific filter maintenance or replacement directions for your model, or check out our general guide below.

How Do I Clean A Reusable Filter?

Typically, removing a reusable filter is simple enough, as is cleaning it. You’ll wash the filter with mild soap and warm water, being sure to gently rinse it clean of all soap and grime. Be sure the filter is completely dry before reinstalling.

How Do I Replace A Filter?

Switching out an old filter for a new one is quite simple. The first step is to locate your filter, and check the side panel for a height/width/depth measurement. Once you have these numbers, head down to your local hardware store and you’ll find a wide variety of filters. You can choose based on preferences, allergies, pets, etc. in order to find the most suitable filter for your needs. Upon returning home, you simply slide the old filter out and put the new filter in, facing in the same direction as the one you removed.

A Clean Filter = Cool Savings and a Cooler Space
