How to Heat Your House Efficiently in the Fall

HVAC Bryn Mawr

The holiday season is approaching! For many people, that means family feasts and festive fun…and a hefty dent in your wallet. One way to lessen the sting of seasonal spending is to be more aware of the way you use your HVAC system. To make sure that you are heating your house efficiently this fall and winter, follow our easy tips for HVAC Bryn Mawr residents.

Tips for High Efficiency Heating

The sudden switch from warm Indian summer days to the much cooler temps of fall can be jarring. As a result, you might be tempted to crank up your thermostat. But before you do, check out our tips for using your HVAC system in a way that won’t break your budget.

  1. Check Your Thermostat Settings: Depending on your system, it may be more efficient to set the temperature based on the time of day. For example, when no one is home, you can choose a slightly lower temperature, such as a mild 68 degrees. When everyone is home, a standard 72 to 75 degrees is comfortable and won’t break the bank. Be sure not to shut your heat off completely or turn it down very low – this can make your system work harder to bring the temperature back up, and can also lead to problems like frozen pipes during really cold weather.
  2. Close Doors: To keep the heat where you need it most, close doors to rooms that are often empty or unused. Keep bedroom doors closed until closer to bedtime.
  3. Invest In Climate-Friendly Curtains: To improve your home’s insulation, consider  purchasing curtains or blinds specifically designed to keep warmth in and cold gusts out.

In addition to the simple tips above, there’s no substitute for professional preventative care, maintenance, and heating repair. These are best handled by experts, such as the licensed HVAC technicians at SBPHA/C. DIY blogs and general contractors may mean well, but the risk that comes with their lack of expertise is not worth the money you might save. After all, HVAC systems keep our homes warm, but with poor maintenance, they can break down suddenly or require more expensive repairs.
